Recycling Works! Deer Park™ Mobile Tour Teaches Value of Recycling Through Fun Activities in Washington, D.C.

Deer Park Encourages Americans to Increase Recycling

WASHINGTON—(BUSINESS WIRE)— Deer Park® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water is launching a mobile education tour to visit Washington, D.C. area community events, public spaces and retailers to teach people that recycling works. Appearing this October, an interactive mobile vehicle will feature games and exhibits that show recycling in action.

Visitors will experience:

Games for kids that teach the benefits of recycling
A walk-through exhibit about the bottle recycling process, including the range of products that can be made from recycled plastic bottles, such as clothing and household items
“Broadening the use of recycled plastic in our bottles is important; however, low recycling rates are a roadblock in obtaining recycled plastic,” said Sarah Linden, Brand Manager for Deer Park. “We hope our education efforts – like this informative recycling tour and the new Deer Park .5 liter bottle made with 50 percent recycled plastic – will raise awareness and encourage people to recycle more.”

The tour can be found at the following locations:

Friday, Oct. 14: Shoppers, Middlesex Shopping Center – Baltimore, Md. (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
Friday, Oct. 14: Shoppers, Anchor Square Shopping Center – Baltimore, Md. (1 p.m. – 4 p.m.)
Saturday, Oct. 15: Taste of Georgetown – Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
Sunday, Oct. 16: Safeway – 14th St. SE, Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
Thursday, Oct. 20: Safeway – 6500 Piney Branch Rd. NW, Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
Friday, Oct. 21: Safeway – 4203 Davenport St NW, Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
Saturday, Oct. 22: Safeway – 1855 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
Sunday, Oct. 23: Safeway – 1855 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, D.C. (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
The tour is presented with Keep America Beautiful (KAB), a nationwide nonprofit that combines education with hands-on stewardship to make America’s communities cleaner, greener, and more livable. As part of a broader partnership, the company sponsors KAB’s Great American Cleanup™, which collected 208 million bottles in 2011. In addition, a nationwide competition, Recycle-Bowl, was recently introduced to see which schools can recycle the most.

“In 2008, we set a goal to help double U.S. recycling rates for all PET plastic beverage bottles to 60 percent by 2018,” said Michael Washburn, Sustainability Director for Nestlé Waters North America/Deer Park. “We are working with recycling advocates and across industries and government to drive significant increases in beverage container recycling.”

Making bottles with recycled plastic (rPET) reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent on average compared to making bottles from all-new materials. Also, people can reduce the overall environmental impact associated with drinking a bottle of water by 25 percent, just by recycling the bottle after use, according to a 2010 bottle lifecycle study performed for Nestlé Waters by Quantis International.

The new Deer Park 50 percent rPET .5 liter bottle is available in Baltimore and Washington D.C. at many convenient locations where Deer Park® Natural Spring Water is already available. A new “made with 50% recycled plastic” icon has been added to the packaging, explaining that recycling bottles can provide material for new bottles and other products. For more information, please visit: www.deerpark.com/rpet

Delta Dental launches educational program throughout South Florida for Hispanic Heritage Month

happenings post

MIAMI, Sept. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Delta Dental Insurance Company will team up with Navarro Discount Pharmacy to launch “La Feria de Sonrisitas” (The Fair of Little Smiles), a two-month dental educational initiative to provide free screenings and oral education to members of the Miami-Dade community. The campaign launches on October 1st during an event at the Navarro Discount Pharmacy located at 4410 W 16 Ave Hialeah, FL from 9:00 AM through 12:00 PM.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo will appear at the October 1 launch in support of the educational activities planned for children of the community, who will learn about the importance of dental hygiene.
The Ratoncito Perez, Hispanic counterpart of the tooth fairy, will begin his search for “La Sonrisita de Miami” (Miami’s Little Smile) at the event. This is a sweepstakes activity that will allow children to be photographed with the Ratoncito Perez character and enter for a chance to be featured in Delta Dental’s children’s coloring book “Las Aventuras del Ratoncito Perez” (The Tooth Fairy’s Adventures).
“Dental disease, in spite of being 100 percent preventable, persists among children at an unacceptably high rate,” said Solomon Romano, Hispanic marketing manager for Delta Dental. “La Feria de Sonrisitas demonstrates Delta Dental’s commitment to teaching children in the Miami community about the importance of regular dental cleanings and checkups, as well as daily brushing and flossing in order to achieve and maintain a healthy smile.”
Commissioner Esteban Bovo believes communities need better information with respect to oral health so that children can have healthier smiles and lead healthier lives free from dental pain. “That is why we are supporting this important initiative to provide education, health screenings and community participation throughout Miami-Dade,” said Commissioner Bovo.
According to the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), tooth decay is the most common childhood disease, affecting nearly 60 percent of children. Of the 4 million children born each year, nearly half will get their first cavity by the time they reach second grade, according to estimates. For minorities and children from low-income families, the statistics are even grimmer.
Throughout the months of October and November, Delta Dental’s “La Feria de Sonrisitas” campaign will occur at 17 participating Navarro Pharmacy locations throughout South Florida. The events will feature games, food stands, coloring workshops, temporary tattoos, storytelling with the Ratoncito Perez and free dental screenings to all attendees.
